Optical Brightener Dosage: Why There Is No Universal Starting Number
A useful dosage discussion needs an exact commercial grade, a clear calculation basis and defined process conditions. Catalogue purity or a percentage for another formulation is not a ready-to-use production recommendation.
Define what the percentage refers to
Before comparing any figures, ask what material and basis they describe. A percentage could refer to a product specification, a formulation component or an application calculation; those meanings cannot be exchanged. Record the units and the relevant grade-specific definition. If a quotation or copied document leaves the basis unclear, obtain clarification rather than turning the number into a trial instruction.
Keep supplied form in the calculation
Powder, suspension, granule and liquid descriptions do not establish a shared application basis. Two samples with similar trade names may still require different technical interpretation. Ask for the current document for each exact commercial grade and have the responsible technical team review any calculation. This guide provides no conversion formula or universal loading range because the necessary product and process evidence has not been established for a generic reader.
Do not use “more” as the acceptance criterion
The objective is an acceptable result under defined conditions, not the largest addition amount. Agree the appearance reference and other end-use requirements before evaluating alternatives. If a sample shows an unwanted shade or inconsistent result, document the material, conditions and observations and consult the technical team. Do not assume that every such result has the same cause or can be corrected by a single increase or decrease.
Turn a dosage question into a useful inquiry
Send the exact model and commercial form, current document revision, substrate, application stage and existing process reference. Describe the issue you want the evaluation to resolve and what has already been measured. That information supports a targeted technical discussion. A website article, model comparison or competitor’s range is not a substitute for the supplied grade’s current TDS/SDS and a representative evaluation approved by the responsible team.
Bring these points to the discussion
- Clarify units and calculation basis.
- Use the document for the actual supplied form.
- Do not adopt an unverified universal dosage table.
Catalogue information supports initial selection. Request the current TDS/SDS and evaluate a representative sample before production.
